AtT Dev Log #1

Hey everyone, Kejayco here!

Firstly, THANK YOU ALL FOR 20,000 subscribers on YouTube! It's such a surreal thing to see how much this game has blown up over the past months. We really do appreciate it.

In case you missed it, we dropped an April Fools' video on our channel that just might be worth checking out >:)

Secondly, as you might be able to tell, we’ve opened up an itch.io page! After some discussion we decided that we want to make this fangame as accessible as possible, since Newgrounds and/or Gamejolt may be blocked in certain regions.

As of now, the current release plan will be PC first, then Mobile at a later date. For the initial release, we will have 2 near-identical versions:

  • A “flash player version” on Newgrounds (using the Newgrounds Flash Player, until Ruffle is fully able to support Actionscript 3.0)
  • And a downloadable .exe, which will be available both here and on Gamejolt.

The mobile port will be worked on after the above PC versions are released, since we would have to rework the entire codebase of the game to suit mobile devices. It is likely going to be Android only (via APK), since making an iOS port is a pain in the butt.
And of course, these plans are subject to change as Flash Player emulation continues to be developed, so look out for future updates!

Thirdly, we’ll be using this itch.io page to release dev logs and updates! Things have been going… fairly slow, unfortunately. So while we can’t give any major teasers at the moment, having a check-in with the community every now and then is at least some way in which we can be more transparent about our development process without giving away anything about the actual plot of the game.

Regarding the current progress, we are not as close to completion as you might initially think.

Although last year’s trailer might make it look like we’ve finished majority of the animations in the game and are just adding final touches, that’s just not the case sadly. We specifically picked out scenes that were going to be in the trailer, then animated those particular shots, and ONLY those particular shots. Most of those scenes are still unfinished and can be changed.

Technically percentage-wise, we are about 20% done with the final product, but that number still doesn't mean much since not every element of the game is equal in size or effort. This is a more realistic view of our current progress:

So what are we even doing now? Does this mean AtT will never be released?

Of course it’s going to be released! We just need much more time than we anticipated. Developing this game, especially since it is VERY animation-heavy, takes a lot of time and effort.

Just because there are 6 of us, doesn't mean that we work 6x faster than Puffballs would on his own. The work is shared rather unequally between all of us, and only 2 of us (Argus and Tomas) have the responsibility of drawing art/animating. It's also not fair to compare us to Puffballs because he has been used to working on these games for more than a decade, whereas this is the first time we've ever tried it.

We are also only working on this fangame on a part-time basis. Most of us are in high school or university, so we have to balance AtT with our own personal lives.

As of right now, we are working on storyboards and layouts to track character movements and important scene elements, to make coordination of the animations easier to follow.

Once these storyboards and plans are completed, we'll try sharing the workload with the rest of the team, with a bit of practice. This should speed things up somewhat. These pre-animation plans above will be a big help to that, so we can all have a good visual idea of how the scenes will play out.

Anyway I think that’s quite a lot that I’ve said in this inaugural post, so again be sure to check in every now and again for more updates!

If you have any questions please do leave them in the comments below, or join our Discord server! We’re pretty active there so come on down and have some fun!

And as always, thank you for all of the support!

Cheers,
Kejayco
